An Entrepreneur’s Journey With Walmart Vriddhi

In growth, we often find progress. But the two aren’t always synonyms. Walmart’s Vriddhi program is focused on helping Indian micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) expand their domestic capabilities. That’s not quite as easy to do as it is to write.One entrepreneur who understands that truth intimately is Chanda Sharma. She’s the owner of the Delhi Gift House in Delhi, where she sells gifts for special holidays and occasions. Her story, and her success, are triumphs. But not without tragedy.Chanda started her business alongside her husband in 2018 just after the pair welcomed their first child. They were a team. Chanda handled the marketing, photography and product listings. Her husband interfaced with vendors and ensured the supply chain stayed well oiled.In 2021, during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, Chanda lost her husband to the virus. She admits to fearing for her future: She was alone in the midst of a global pandemic, facing the demands of motherhood, a crippled economy and vendors who lacked confidence in the capacity of a woman to operate a business.Then she got a call.Develop
“I got a call from the Walmart Vriddhi program in June of 2021, and they asked me a simple question: ‘How is your business doing?’” Chanda remembers. “And I responded, ‘My business is inactive… and it’s been that way for three months now.”Undaunted by the inactivity, the team at Vriddhi offered Chanda something she wasn’t expecting: support. Then things started to change.“The team first suggested that I should consider clearing dead inventory and get some cash in hand,” Chanda said. “I reviewed my situation and decided to list combo packs of the items in my inventory on the marketplaces. After that, I really started to see some traction.”Connect
By connecting entrepreneurs to community, learning and the Flipkart marketplace, Vriddhi opens doors to opportunity. With each learning module she completed through Vriddhi’s business course offerings, Chanda’s confidence grew.“I felt motivated after every training session I attended,” Chanda said. “After Diwali, I cleared all my loans and backed trust from my vendors. Now, I’m in the third year of singlehandedly managing my business — and my little one.”Grow
For Chanda, growth has meant progress. Her hard work, dedication to the process, and a willingness to learn have all paid off. She’s thriving. And she’s not slowing down.“Since joining the Walmart Vriddhi team, my business has grown 10 times over,” Chanda said. “When I look back and think about how I reached this level, I have Walmart Vriddhi to thank.”Looking to the future, Chanda wants to invest in a small factory so she can own the means of production. Her goal is to create her own product line – and to employ more women in India. With Vriddhi’s backing, she thinks it’s possible.“In my family, women weren’t allowed to work, and I didn’t come from a family with a business background,” Chanda said. “If I start my own unit, I can employ more women and generate employment in my community. I can offer opportunities for artisans and weavers.”At its core, Chanda’s greatest goal is to inspire – to build a better future for her child and her community. And she’s well on her way.“No matter what you’re doing, give it your best. Only then can you grow,” Chanda said. “It can take time to understand, but once you do, there’s no going back.”

I’m an Amazon pharmacist. Here’s why it’s a great career, plus my tips for customers.

As the pharmacist-in-charge for Amazon Pharmacy in Phoenix, Arizona, Andrew Vo leads a team committed to making it easier and more affordable for customers to access the medications they need.“Everyone should be able to access their prescription medications in a transparent, affordable, and convenient way,” said Vo. “I know the work we’re doing can help people manage their medications more seamlessly, and that inspires me every day.”

What’s something most people don’t know about you?I was a contestant on American Idol many years ago. I even made it to the second round, but my auditions were never aired on TV. I sang “Rolling in the Deep” by Adele and Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition.” I still love to sing, and you can usually find me belting out some Bruno Mars.What is the most rewarding part about being an Amazon pharmacist? The positive impact on people’s lives. (Mar. 7, 2023) — Atrium Health and Best Buy Health are combining their strengths to develop new hospital at home offerings that will enhance the patient experience of receiving hospital-level care in the home. The goal of the partnership is to enable providers to deliver high-quality care to patients in the comfort of their own homes, while helping reduce emotional and financial burdens on patients and caregivers.

This partnership takes advantage of Atrium Health’s leadership position in telemedicine, including a well-established hospital at home program, combined with a patient population of nearly 3 million people. Best Buy Ads launches My Ads, a self-service campaign management platform

Best Buy Ads, Best Buy’s retail media network, is launching a self-service campaign platform called My Ads, that will make it easier than ever for brand and agency partners to purchase, plan, view and manage select campaigns.

Currently in pilot with seven partners, My Ads will initially offer self-service reporting for Onsite Display and Sponsored Products campaigns – meaning near real-time data from these campaigns will live on the My Ads platform. It will give partners detailed insights on their existing campaigns, as well as the option to view and download campaign results based on adjustable criteria like time, products, and campaign placements.

The new My Ads service was designed for brands and agency partners who are looking for a more turn-key solution. Of course, Best Buy will continue to provide high-touch, personalized services for partners who want to collaboratively create more innovative and comprehensive campaigns.

In the future, My Ads will allow partners the option to log into the platform to build, view or manage various campaign elements on their own.

Teen Tech Center donation campaign is back for 3rd year

We’re excited to announce that for the third year, Best Buy customers will be able to join us in our mission to help teens build brighter futures through technology.  

The main way we do this is by supporting the Best Buy Teen Tech Center® program, an initiative of the Best Buy Foundation. The program provides tools, training and mentorship so young people can discover their passions and pursue career and education goals.  

Starting March 1, customers who make purchases in Best Buy stores, online, or on the app will be able to add a donation to the Best Buy Foundation in support of Teen Tech Centers. Funds raised will help reach the goal of building 100 locations by 2025. More than 50 Teen Tech Centers are already operating across the United States.

Teen Tech Centers are housed and operated by local nonprofit organizations. The centers provide a safe space for teens to create, learn and explore using the latest cutting-edge technology with the support of peers and adult mentors. At each center, members build skills for their future careers through hands-on activities in photography, augmented and virtual reality, 3-D design and more. 

Teen Tech Center milestones 

The past year was full of pivotal moments for the Teen Tech Center program, and we couldn’t do it without the continued generosity of Best Buy employees, customers and community partners. We are proud of the work we have done, but we’re not done yet.

Program celebrates 10 years  

The Best Buy Foundation opened the first Teen Tech Center in 2013 in partnership with the Minneapolis Central Branch of the Hennepin County Library. Since then, countless dreams have become a reality within the walls of Best Buy Teen Tech Centers across the nation.   

50th location opens in Indiana 

The 50th Best Buy Teen Tech Center, sponsored by the Damien and Katy Harmon Foundation, opened in August. It marked the halfway point of the Foundation’s goal of building 100 locations by 2025.  

Best Buy Teen Tech Center teens featured in national ad campaign 

In May, Best Buy Teen Tech Center teens were featured in a new nationwide ad campaign that focused on the mentor/mentee relationship, and how Teen Tech Centers are helping them pursue their dreams. 

3 states welcome first Teen Tech Centers 

Kentucky, Oklahoma and North Carolina saw the grand openings of their first Teen Tech Center locations. It takes a lot of partners to help teens build brighter futures through technology, and Best Buy is thankful for their support.

A year in review: Best Buy Health

Technology is at the center of everything we do in our daily lives, and as that continues to be true, the role of technology within healthcare is becoming more important than ever before.  

Today, consumers want to receive care in their own homes, and providers are rapidly looking for ways to incorporate digital tools into healthcare delivery to improve outcomes and experiences. That is where Best Buy Health comes in. 

Best Buy Health enables care at home for everyone and to do that, we are focused on three key areas: 

Wellness at home: offering the latest tech products to keep you and your family healthy.

Picture this, you’re a parent with a sick child who shops on BestBuy.com and purchases a Tytocare medical exam kit. It arrives on your doorstep later that day. You use the kit to do a virtual visit with a physician who guides you through which tests to perform using the included attachments. This data is then sent directly to the physician who can use it to make a diagnosis and send a prescription to your local pharmacy. 

Aging at home: helping you and your loved ones age comfortably at home.

Best Buy Health has a suite of products and services that provide support through our Caring Centers. Our Caring Center employees are real people available to help with everything from medical emergencies to scheduling appointments or just being there to help address emotional concerns like loneliness. Imagine if you’re a caregiver for your aging parent and they live alone in their home. Something comes up unexpectedly and you’re unable to visit them that day and as a result, your parent experiences a deep feeling of loneliness. Using one of our Lively devices, your parent contacts our Caring Center and is connected with an empathetic employee who provides them with a sense of comfort. 

Care at home: connecting you to your trusted healthcare providers. 

For example, you show up at the emergency room and upon your examination the doctor decides you would be a good candidate for their hospital at home program. Your provider sends you home with a Current Healthwearable that helps monitor your vital signs and our Geek Squad then comes into your home, sets it up for you, shows you how to use it, and remains on standby for any tech-related troubleshooting. Once set up, our Clinical Command Center employee is consistently monitoring your health data collected by the wearable as a first-line triage for any issues that arise. Your provider is also easily able to view your vital signs through the Current Health platform and can monitor your recovery process and adjust your care when needed. All you need to do is focus on getting better. 

A year to celebrate 

In 2022, Best Buy Health made great progress in bringing health into the home. We released several new products and implemented new care-at-home programs across the country. 

Here’s a look at some of the accomplishments from Best Buy Health from the last year.

New products, services

Following the FDA’s new rule allowing the sale of over-the-counter hearing aids, we introduced a new experience for hearing devices. This makes it convenient for the millions of Americans with mild to moderate hearing loss to easily get the products and support they need. We also introduced an expanded collection of devices, an in-store hearing experience in more than 300 stores, and a new online hearing assessment tool that helps customers find the right hearing device for them. 

Our Lively Health & Safety Packages were updated to better empower those who are aging at home, and two new services were added: Nurse On-Call and Care Advocate. In addition, Lively Urgent Response was made compatiblewith Amazon Alexa-enabled devices. Now, users can say, “Alexa, call for help,” and will be immediately connected with someone who will assess the situation and get them the help they need in a variety of situations. 

We also extended our capabilities in the care-at-home space through Geek Squad, successfully rolling out additional health training to our Agents and launching a pilot with Geisinger Health.

Big wins for Current Health

Current Health, a technology company with an FDA-cleared care-at-home technology platform, marked its first year as part of Best Buy Health. We acquired the company to help us accelerate our care at home strategy. The combination of Current Health’s world-class technology and Best Buy’s size and ability to help customers with technology in their homes helps close the gap in enabling care at home. 

Together, in 2022, we expanded our relationships between Current Health and health systems such as Geisinger, Mount Sinai Health System, Parkland Health and the UK National Health Service. We also implemented new care-at-home programs with NYU Langone Health and others. Along with these partners, our care at home business currently works with five of the 10 biggest health systems in the United States. 

And the work Current Health is doing is making an impact. Current Health customer the Defense Health Agency’s (DHA) virtual care program was the focus of a study published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research (JMIR). In the study, researchers compared the financial impact and clinical outcomes at hospitals that participated in the care-at-home program versus those that weren’t. The researchers at Current Health and DHA found a 12% lower length of stay averaged across all COVID-19 patients, saving $2,047 per patient and a total net savings of an estimated $2.3 million in the first year of the program, with no increase in 30-day readmissions or emergency department visits. This important research demonstrates that care-at-home programs can improve the operational efficiency of our care delivery without harming clinical outcomes, which is vital for making healthcare better and more sustainable. 

In addition to securing new relationships, the Current Health team developed new platform features that deepen our support for patients, including chronic condition management and its own in-house Clinical Command Center.

Finally, Current Health was awarded “Best Hospital Technology Implementation” in the 2022 MedTech Breakthrough Awards program. The award recognizes Current Health’s role supporting health systems across the U.S. implement innovative care-at-home programs.

We are bringing the momentum of 2022 with us into the new year and are excited about what is to come in 2023.

FY24 Financial Guidance

“As we enter FY24, the consumer electronics industry continues to feel the effects of the broader macro environment and its impact on consumers,” said Matt Bilunas, Best Buy CFO. “As a result, our outlook assumes comparable sales decline 3% to 6% for the year, with the most sales pressure in the first quarter, as year-over-year comparisons ease through the year.” 

“During FY24, we expect to expand our gross profit rate approximately 40 to 70 basis points versus the past year as we evolve our membership program and realize benefits from our cost optimization efforts,” Bilunas continued. “Non-GAAP SG&A expense is expected to increase versus last year as our cost takeout initiatives and lower variable costs are offset by the addback of incentive compensation, the extra week and higher depreciation.”

Best Buy is providing the following financial guidance for FY24, which includes 53 weeks.

Revenue of $43.8 billion to $45.2 billion

Comparable sales decline of 3.0% to 6.0%

Enterprise non-GAAP operating income rate2 of 3.7% to 4.1% 

Non-GAAP effective income tax rate2 of approximately 24.5%

Non-GAAP diluted EPS2 of $5.70 to $6.50

Capital expenditures of approximately $850 million

Note: Incorporated in the above guidance, the 53rd week is expected to add approximately $700 million of revenue to Q4 FY24 and provide a benefit of approximately 10 basis points to the company’s full year non-GAAP operating income rate.2  

Domestic Segment Q4 FY23 Results

Domestic Revenue

Domestic revenue of $13.53 billion decreased 9.8% versus last year primarily driven by a comparable sales decline of 9.6%.

From a merchandising perspective, the largest drivers of the comparable sales decline on a weighted basis were computing, home theater, appliances and mobile phones. These drivers were partially offset by growth in the gaming and tablet categories.

Domestic online revenue of $5.14 billion decreased 13.0% on a comparable basis, and as a percentage of total Domestic revenue, online revenue was 38.0% versus 39.4% last year. 

Domestic Gross Profit Rate

Domestic gross profit rate was 19.8% versus 20.0% last year. The lower gross profit rate was primarily due to lower product margin rates, which were partially offset by favorable services margin rates and higher profit-sharing revenue from the company’s private label and co-branded credit card arrangement. The improved services margin rates were primarily driven by an approximately $30 million profit-sharing benefit from the company’s services plan portfolio. 

Domestic Selling, General and Administrative Expenses (“SG&A”)

Domestic GAAP SG&A was $2.07 billion, or 15.3% of revenue, versus $2.30 billion, or 15.3% of revenue, last year. On a non-GAAP basis, SG&A was $2.05 billion, or 15.1% of revenue, versus $2.27 billion, or 15.1% of revenue, last year. Both GAAP and non-GAAP SG&A decreased primarily due to reduced store payroll expense, incentive compensation and advertising expenses.

International Segment Q4 FY23 Results

International Revenue

International revenue of $1.20 billion decreased 12.2% versus last year. This decrease was primarily driven by a comparable sales decline of 5.7% and the negative impact of approximately 570 basis points from foreign currency exchange rates.

International Gross Profit Rate

International gross profit rate was 21.7% versus 22.9% last year. The lower gross profit rate was primarily driven by lower product margin rates, which included increased promotions, and a lower mix of revenue from the higher margin rate services category.

International SG&A

International SG&A was $189 million, or 15.7% of revenue, versus $206 million, or 15.0% of revenue, last year. SG&A decreased primarily due to the impact of foreign currency exchange rates and lower incentive compensation.

Restructuring Charges

The company incurred $86 million of restructuring costs in Q4 FY23, primarily related to employee termination benefits associated with an enterprise-wide restructuring initiative that commenced in Q2 FY23 to better align its spending with critical strategies and operations, as well as to optimize its cost structure. Consistent with prior practice, restructuring costs are excluded from the company’s non-GAAP results.

Share Repurchases and Dividends

In Q4 FY23, the company returned a total of $743 million to shareholders through share repurchases of $549 million and dividends of $194 million. For the full year, the company returned a total of $1.8 billion to shareholders through share repurchases of $1.0 billion and dividends of $789 million. 

Today, the company announced its board of directors approved a 5% increase in the regular quarterly dividend to $0.92 per share. The regular quarterly dividend will be payable on April 13, 2023, to shareholders of record as of the close of business on March 23, 2023.

Conference Call

Best Buy is scheduled to conduct an earnings conference call at 8:00 a.m. Eastern Time (7:00 a.m. Central Time) on March 2, 2023. A webcast of the call is expected to be available at www.investors.bestbuy.com, both live and after the call.

Walmart Health Nearly Doubles in Size With Launch Into Two New States in 2024

Since we opened our first Walmart Health center in 2019, our goal has been simple: serve our communities by providing accessible, convenient and affordable healthcare. Our healthcare providers don’t just care for patients – they build relationships within their communities.Take Dr. Umara Saleem at our center in Brandon, Florida, for example. When a middle-aged patient came to see her showing obvious symptoms of a heart attack, she spent an hour persuading the patient to get emergency care, even though this patient was fearful of the hospital. Had Dr. Saleem not persisted, the outcome could have been very serious – the patient had a 99% blockage in her artery. After getting the emergency care she needed, this patient returned to the Walmart Health center to personally thank Dr. Saleem, and the patient has continued to see her to manage her overall health with regular primary care visits. This patient – along with other members of her community – can live better by receiving convenient care where she is already shopping for essentials and healthy food.

Walmart Health Center Expansions Growth

That’s why I’m excited to announce that in 2024 we will be growing in a big way, opening 28 new Walmart Health center locations. This will expand Walmart Health’s footprint into two new states – Missouri and Arizona – and deepen our presence in Texas. By the end of 2024, we’ll have more than 75 Walmart Health centers across the United States.

With this growth in 2024, we will nearly double our current footprint, offering accessible, convenient and affordable care in two new states and expanding our presence in Texas to help the communities we serve live better, healthier lives

Best Buy celebrates 10 years of St. Jude Thanks and Giving® campaign

For the past decade, Best Buy has collected more than $160 million in donations for the annual St. Jude Thanks and Giving® campaign benefitting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®. We couldn’t do it without the continued generosity of our employees, customers and communities.  

This holiday season was no exception. Our employees and customers went above and beyond, raising over $15 million at Best Buy store registers, online at BestBuy.com, on our app, during in-home service visits, and more. Since 2013, our communities have stepped up to support the children at St. Jude, making us the largest corporate fundraising partner.

This year demonstrated the true power of coming together to make an impact. Here are a few memorable moments:

We’ve got (holiday) spirit! Our team in Lynchburg, Virginia was one of several Best Buy stores to lead the way in raising money to support the children of St. Jude over the holiday season.

Best Buy employees gathered in Memphis, T.N. to participate in the St. Jude Marathon weekend. They raised $52,231, topping their initial goal of $50,000. Now that’s going the extra mile!

A customer at our store in Lafayette, Louisiana, said he’d make a big donation if employee Adam Harris cut his hair. Challenge accepted. Adam cut off 14 inches and donated it.

Every penny helps make sure families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food. Because of this, families can focus on helping their child live. St. Jude also shares the breakthroughs it makes, and every child saved at St. Jude means doctors and scientists worldwide can use that knowledge to save thousands more children.

Money raised through donations can help St. Jude:

Cover in-patient hospital stays of 1,108 days for two patients   

Provide 12,299 days of intravenous chemotherapy for leukemia or solid tumor patients.   

Cover the cost of treating 48 pediatric cancer patients, whose treatment can last three years or longer, at an average cost of $425,000 per patient and up to $1 million per patient
