We celebrate members of the military community and contribute to initiatives that give back to those who served our country. Earlier this month, Amazon’s Ring announced a new collaboration with Homes For Our Troops (HFOT) to support our nation’s heroes.HFOT makes a difference every day by building and donating specially adapted custom homes to severely injured post-9/11 veterans. Since 2004, HFOT has built and donated over 345 specially adapted custom homes to veterans across the U.S.To advance HFOT’s mission, Ring is making a monetary contribution and donating 1,000 home security devices, including Ring Video Doorbells, Pathlights, and Alarm Systems. These items will complement the over 40 adaptations typically found in HFOT homes designed to increase accessibility.Expressing his excitement about the initiative, HFOT President and CEO, Brig. Gen. Tom Landwermeyer said, “The new devices will provide an extra layer of security to our homes. During the event, held on the 247th birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps, Mitchell shared more about the adaptations that veterans can receive for their homes. He said, “Every aspect of the house is fully accessible—even outside, there is a 360-degree walkway around the whole property. Some of the adaptations include wider doorways, roll-under sinks, roll-under countertops to cook if you’re in a wheelchair. Every aspect of the home is customized.”

Quintas and Mitchell discussed the importance of corporate and nonprofit collaborations, and Young shared more about how his Ring doorbell helped increase his peace of mind when he’s away from his home. Young said, “I can check on my house anytime I want to and see what’s going on. That bit of stress relief allowed me to maintain control of my safe space and allowed me to be out and about at the same time. And for a lot of soldiers who come back and are hypersensitive and experience high levels of anxiety, that’s actually relieving some of that anxiety.”Young shared more about the first time a guest rang his Ring doorbell and when he realized it could help support his accessibility needs. He said, “I don’t move very quickly, and my phone was right with me. I picked it up, and I could talk to him from where I was in the house and tell him, ‘Hold on a minute. It’s going take me about two minutes to get to you.’ And then I realized that it’s really helpful for someone with mobility issues to not have to rush to try and answer the door.”Young talked about what it meant to him that HFOT awarded him a home. He said, “Homes for Our Troops doesn’t give you a house so you can live in it. How a blown-glass artist found success as an Amazon Handmade seller

Produced by Selling Partner Communities, Handcrafted is a video series taking you inside the studios and workshops of artists and makers as they share their stories and give us a peek into their creative process.Artist Dehanna Jones discovered exactly what she wanted to do for a career at age 17, when she tried glassblowing for the first time while studying at the University of Washington (UW).

Jones studied ceramics at UW, although after graduating, she decided to work for blown-glass artists to learn the craft. She rented time in other artists’ spaces to create her own designs until she decided that she wanted her own studio. Today, Jones is a proud owner of Totally Blown Glassworks, which she co-founded about 24 years ago.“I always knew this is what I was going to do,” Jones says. “So I borrowed money from the City of Seattle through the Community Capital Development Program, and I borrowed money from all my friends, and I borrowed money from all my credit cards and built a hot shop.”

Growing up with a father who ran his own business as an auctioneer and antique shop owner, Jones knew what to expect as a small business owner—but being a working artist and a small business owner required her to wear more hats than she ever could’ve imagined.“There wasn’t that, ‘Everything stops at five and you get to go home,’” she said. “You work all the time. You need to be a bookkeeper, you need to be a creative writer—so you can write about your products and about yourself—you need to be able to take good photographs.”

While juggling all of that can be tough, Jones said that for her the reward was knowing that she was doing it for herself—for her own business. To help transition to online sales, Jones joined Amazon Handmade even before it went live in 2015.“The moment Handmade went live, I had everything ready to go [to sell on the Amazon store],” Jones said, and adds that Handmade also gave her access to “a large demographic of potential buyers.”After more than 36 years since she first gave glassblowing a try in college, Jones stills loves the craft.“I still learn something every day and I still enjoy it,” she said.Read more about Jones’ story on Amazon’s Selling Partners Blog.

As we shared, a Walmart associate opened fire last Tuesday night, in the store’s breakroom. Sadly, this resulted in the deaths of six amazing, irreplaceable members of our family.

Randy Blevins (Top Left), Fernando “Jesus” Chavez-Barron (Top Middle), Lorenzo Gamble (Top Right), Tyneka Johnson (Bottom Left), Brian Pendleton (Bottom Middle), Kellie Pyle (Bottom Right).

Randy Blevins was a 29-year overnight stock associate who never missed a day of work. He leaves behind his best friend Teresa and three stepdaughters.Fernando “Jesus” Chavez-Barron was a front end associate and 11th grade honors student who’d recently started working with us to assist his family.Lorenzo Gamble was a 15-year custodian whose greatest joys were football and spending time with his two sons.Tyneka Johnson was an overnight associate who loved music, dancing and dreamed of attending college soon.Brian Pendleton was a 10-year custodian who always arrived early to his shifts and loved to joke with his fellow associates.Kellie Pyle was an overnight team associate. She leaves behind two children, a granddaughter and a fiancé she had recently moved to the region to marry.Four other associates were injured that night. Two remain in the hospital and two have been released.Nothing can replace these beautiful lives, or heal the scars their loved ones have now suffered. Hundreds of associates, leaders, and community members attended vigils in their honor the past two nights. As we grieve, we’re supporting these families with funeral, travel and other expenses. And we have a physical site set up where associates can meet, connect and speak to counselors. All Walmart associates and their families have access to confidential and mental health support resources at no cost – including phone, chat-based or video support. You can see these resources at one.walmart.com/wellbeing. The Walmart Foundation also intends to contribute $1 million to the United Way of South Hampton Roads’ Hope & Healing Fund, which will support those impacted by the shooting and the broader Chesapeake community. Walmart will provide a 2:1 match for associate donations to this fund as part of our Season of Giving Back campaign.We understand this was a moment that can never be forgotten, particularly for the surviving associates of Store #1841. The store is closed and will remain so for the foreseeable future. All associates will continue being paid regardless of planned schedules. Amazon introduces a new feature that turns your Echo device into a storytelling companion

Parents know the drill well. It’s bedtime, the kids are going to sleep, but tonight, they don’t want to just hear you read from a book. They want to come up with a story with music and visuals. Your brain starts sifting through characters they like and plausible plots avoiding dead ends. What if a new feature on a smart device could help?Such a feature now exists on Amazon’s Echo Show devices. “Create with Alexa” uses advances in conversational and generative artificial intelligence (AI) to empower young storytellers to build unique stories with a narrative arc, colorful graphics, and fun, complementary background music. The animated stories then come to life on the screen of your Echo Show devices.What is the ‘Create with Alexa’ feature and how does it work?“It’s an experience where Alexa becomes your child’s co-creator,” said Nico Bishop, a UX designer whose team builds the customer experience for “Create with Alexa.”

Children can say the simple phrase, “Alexa, make a story,” follow a few prompts, and Alexa takes over—generating a unique and original narrative based on the child’s preferences. For each scene, the AI also composes an illustration, background music, and sound effects. The child’s choices of character, setting, and other variables dictate the direction the story goes—and no two stories are the same.For example, once a child has told Alexa they’re ready to create, they select a theme, which could be “space exploration,” “underwater,” or “enchanted forest.” They then choose and name a character—say, an astronaut named Speedy or an alien named Fuzzy—choose a color theme, and pick adjectives like “silly” or “happy” or “mysterious.” With those few inputs, Alexa works behind the scenes to create a five- to 10-line story, told across five unique scenes that are complete with sound and visual effects. Even if the child chooses the same prompts in the future, the story will be different each time. They can then save the story in their personal media gallery to experience it again, and coming soon, share it with their loved ones.Creating technology for familiesKids have long loved listening to stories, and with “Create with Alexa” they can also actively co-create stories of their own.Amazon came up with the idea for “Create with Alexa” the same way it came up with ideas for most products; the team started with the customer and worked backwards. “We’ve always envisioned Alexa to be a trusted companion that brings joy and fun to the family,” said Eshan Bhatnagar, head of product for Alexa AI. “And we created this experience to further that vision.”

The act of creating stories has become part of the regular bedtime routine for Bhatnagar and his 6-year-old son, Reyaansh. “He was one of our early and most demanding beta testers,” Bhatnagar said. “He’s helped us uncover bugs and, at the same time, impatiently demanded more themes and characters to be introduced—‘Pa, I want dinosaurs next’ my son tells me.”As a father, Bhatnagar knew it was essential to make the experience safe for young kids. “From the get-go, we used carefully curated data sources to train AI models,” he said. “We have multiple guardrails such as content filtering and curated prompts to ensure this experience is both delightful and safe.” He said privacy is also key. As with any child-directed Alexa feature, “Create with Alexa” requires verifiable parental consent before it’s enabled on a device.“The moments my son and I spend together creating a fun story are priceless,” Bhatnagar said. “They inspire me not just to improve the ‘Create with Alexa’ experience but, more broadly, to bring the power of generative AI to unlock future possibilities.”The experience is made possible by AI innovationThe entire experience is made possible by innovations in conversational and generative AI that help build the narrative, scenery, and sound. A language model trained on written stories generates the text of the story. It is trained to build a cohesive story by generating text from just a few key inputs.

A scene-generation model illustrates the story by selecting a background image created by AI or human artists. It also adds in relevant objects from the narrative (e.g., pirate, jellyfish, seaweed) to locations, orients gestures (e.g., waving hands), and sets facial expressions (e.g. laughing, crying).Finally, Alexa’s AI sound and music generator produces relevant sounds and complementary background music. The model draws from a large library of instrumental parts, including artist-created chord progressions, harmonies, and rhythms. An AI musical-arrangement system ensures that all the pieces fit together.To help build and improve the “Create with Alexa” experience, the researchers sought feedback from parents and kids in the target age group, ages 4-8, who provided discerning feedback “Everything they said, we took very seriously,” Bishop said. “The parents and their kids had very interesting and innovative ideas, and they were not shy to share them.”As the team worked to make the “Create with Alexa” experience a reality, they continued to improve the technology and experience. For example, “At first we didn’t think we would have contextual music generation,” Bishop said. But, she said the Alexa science team invented on behalf of the customers to enable each story to have unique AI-generated background music based on the thematic elements of the story. Learn more about the science behind it.An evolution in storytellingAccording to Bishop, this kind of AI-assisted story creation is just scratching the surface of what the technology can do. “Kids will want to be able to say, ‘I want to see a wall of chocolate,’ and soon we expect we’ll be able to do that,” she said. She added that voice recognition competency is improving all the time, along with improvements in graphic latency, sound effects, and music capabilities.Bhatnagar said that “Create with Alexa” started at the crossroads of creativity and AI. “We envision a world where anyone can bring their ideas to life in the form of digital creations just by using a few spoken words,” he said. “And Alexa will be right with them, assisting them as their co-creator.”Families can start creating with Alexa on November 29, with a variety of free templates. “Create with Alexa” is available in English on supported Echo devices throughout the U.S.

What started last fall as a pilot is now a nearly 40,000 square foot studio-like space we call our virtual store. Our new Experience Store concept serves as an inspirational destination to help customers discover, learn about and use the latest tech. From immersive demo areas to our newest product categories, these stores offer something for everyone. It’s one of the many ways we’re reimagining our stores to meet our customers’ changing needs. 

We first began testing the new store format in Houston in 2020 and later added additional pilot locations, including one in Charlotte, North Carolina. The results were clear: Customers love it. We’re wrapping up construction and plan to introduce these newly redesigned stores in more than 40 locations across the country just in time for the holidays.  

“For some technology, the best way to know if it’s the right fit for you and your home is to see it in person and get that immersive and inspirational experience,” said Damien Harmon, executive vice president of omnichannel at Best Buy.  “We wanted to give our customers the ultimate destination to discover and get expert advice on the latest in tech.” 

Experience Store highlights 

These reimagined stores have all the brands customers know and love, plus some they may have not discovered yet. They also have new premium experiences for audio, home theater, and luxury appliances. There will be dedicated areas to the new product categories we unveiled earlier this year, more space for Geek Squad and 24/7 lockers for convenient product pick up.  

Here are a few things customers can expect: 

Electric Transportation: We have a wide variety of e-bikes, scooters, mopeds and electric dirt bikes on BestBuy.com, and now all of our experience stores will carry them, too. Shoppers will be able to try them out, as well check out accessories. If you need it, we can even come to your house and help set up your new ride.   

Outdoor Living and Yardbird: People looking to expand their living and entertainment spaces beyond the inside of the house will find furniture, grills and smokers, pizza ovens, lighting and a whole lot more. Top brands include Weber, Traeger and Ooni. There will also be a dedicated Yardbird display showing select collections from its outdoor dining sets, lounge seating, fire tables and accessories. 

Health and Fitness: Whether you’re looking for new exercise equipment for your home gym or want to check out tech for rest and recovery, we have the healthy living essentials you need, including treadmills, bikes and rowers. We can deliver and install those large fitness items right to your home, too. 

Demos: Throughout the experience stores, shoppers will be able to see tech in action at dedicated showcase areas. Whether it’s learning how to set up a home workspace, matching the right Microsoft product to their needs or creating the ultimate home theater experience with the latest Epson ultra short-throw projectors. 

LEGO: Fans of all ages will be able to get hands-on with our ever-growing LEGO assortment, featuring favorite collections like Harry Potter, Super Mario and Star Wars.
