Amazon introduces Halo Rise, a no-contact sleep tracker, but also so much more

Amazon introduces Halo Rise, a no-contact sleep tracker, but also so much more

Decoding the mysteries of sleep was always Dr. Brandon Peters’s dream job. A neurologist by training, he was first drawn into the field two decades ago, when he helped his father get treatment for sleep apnea. “He was the first person I diagnosed,” Dr. Peters said “I got him treated and noticed how much it really transformed his life.” His father ceased snoring and stopped falling asleep during the day. “He could go to a play or see a movie and stay awake,” he says.Dr. Peters, a Stanford-trained sleep medicine physician who has practiced in hospitals around the U.S. and has written more than 1,000 articles about the subject, now helps patients suffering from sleep apnea, insomnia, narcolepsy, and other sleep disorders. He lives in Seattle, which is also the home of another innovator keen on helping people get a good night’s sleep: Amazon. At the annual Devices & Services Fall Launch event, Amazon unveiled a new device called Halo Rise, which is designed to help customers analyze and improve their sleep. Fitting snugly on the nightstand, Halo Rise is a first-of-its-kind contactless sleep tracker powered by the latest low-energy sensor technology and advanced machine learning.

“That customer centricity with Halo Rise has really been about doubling down on the fact that customers want to purchase wellness devices that they can trust. The information you’re getting from it is rigorous. It’s meaningful. It really can help you improve your sleep.”

Dr. Vin Gupta, chief medical officer at Amazon Devices & Services

Halo Rise comes complete with a smart alarm built to lift you out of sleep at the ideal time for waking up and a wake-up light. The LED light can simulate the subtle darkening or brightening of the sun to ease users to bed and help them rise feeling refreshed. Halo Rise also includes sleep and environmental sensors that give customers insights into their sleep quality, helping them deduce actions like lowering the room temperature, drawing the shades, or reducing light levels to improve sleep.“Like diet and exercise, sleep is a cornerstone of people’s wellness and overall health, and too many people struggle with it,” said Dr. Vin Gupta, chief medical officer at Amazon Devices & Services, the business unit that developed Halo Rise. “The issue here is that for something that is so common, we don’t have great solutions at scale.”Good sleep doesn’t need to be just a dreamDr. Gupta is part of a large Amazon team that spent the last few years building Halo Rise. That group also includes Dr. Peters, who helped steer the development of the device’s sleep tracking algorithm powered by machine learning. Dr. Peters said most adults need at least 7-9 hours of sleep. And if we don’t get proper sleep, “we don’t have good insight into our own deficits,” he said. “We wouldn’t recognize that we’re moodier or that we’re making more mistakes at work or that we’re not thinking as clearly. But once we recover, once we get adequate sleep—more hours or better quality—we’re much sharper, we can think more clearly. We might even see an improvement in our mood.”Dr. Gupta said that Amazon worked with partners like Dr. Peters because it wanted to create “a wellness device that people can trust, that has evidence behind it, and that the medical community could embrace so we can really start to move the needle here on what digital health means for people within their homes.” He said that Amazon is working with additional third-party sleep scientists to validate the accuracy of Halo Rise even further.Dr. Gupta also said that the pandemic increased peoples’ attention toward their health. “All of this has upped the ante for us to put products out there that meet the pressing needs of customers. It’s so important that the information Halo Rise provides really means something to customers, and I think it does. They can trust that the information they get in the app in the morning is easy to understand, and it’s actionable,” Dr. Gupta said.“Set it and forget it”

The Amazon team designed Halo Rise with robust accuracy and sleep insights because they wanted customers to meaningfully engage with their sleep data. “We want Halo Rise to both empower the customer to improve their sleep performance, while also being a real ambient product that intelligently works in the background,” said Cody Gordh, product lead of the team that built the device. “If we can make our customers’ lives easier and help them improve their sleep, all without requiring a lot of thinking or hands-on interaction, then we believe the potential of Halo Rise is boundless,” he said. “There’s something so magical about the ‘set it and forget it’ experience with Halo Rise, where all you need to do is go to bed and wake up. It all works automatically.”The hands-off nature of the device points to a concept Amazon calls ambient intelligence, the idea that digital systems, services, and devices can work together in the background on our behalf, helping us create a world that can foresee our needs so we can focus on the things that matter to us. Halo Rise does this work in a few ways. For starters, it’s contactless. “This empowers customers to track their breathing and movement patterns without needing to wear anything on the body, like a wristband or watch,” said Chirag Bhavsar, a senior manager of wireless technology in the Amazon Devices & Services group. By using low-energy sensor technology and a sleep tracking algorithm trained and validated against overnight polysomnography, the clinical gold standard for sleep analysis, Halo Rise automatically gives you detailed and accurate sleep information, even if your partner (or pet) gets into bed first.Where other contactless sleep trackers require nightly setup, Halo Rise features another innovation called primary-user tracking. That means the device automatically tracks the primary user, which is the person nearest to the device, with no user configuration required. So if the primary user slips into bed after their partner has gone to sleep, the sleep algorithm detects that and adjusts the sleep results accordingly. Gordh said that ensuring Halo Rise only collects the primary user’s data presented some especially tough machine learning challenges. But considering the premium that Amazon places on privacy—“it was a central tenet of everything we did with this product,” Gordh said—they were important challenges that Gordh and the team worked tirelessly to solve.Primary-user tracking is just one of the many privacy features baked into Halo Rise. The device has no microphone or camera, and its buttons can be used not only to control the light and smart alarm, but also to manually turn off sleep tracking with one long press. Additionally, “we really leaned into putting customers in control of their data,” said Gordh. That means the device doesn’t collect any information it doesn’t need to help improve your sleep, and customers can download or delete their Halo health data, including their sleep data, any time directly from the Halo app.Halo Rise can be more than a sleep tracker

Introducing Amazon’s Halo Rise | Amazon News

The device’s privacy-focused, contactless sleep tracking allows you to improve your sleep with no interruption to your nighttime or morning routines. In fact, Halo Rise not only doesn’t get in the way of your routines, it can also help make them more personalized.Using background research from Dr. Peters, the Halo team built a smart alarm and wake-up light to help you start your day feeling refreshed. The light simulates the colors and illumination of the sunrise. The alarm, on the other hand, works in concert with the device’s sleep algorithm, which monitors your sleep stages and signals to the alarm when it’s the ideal time to wake you within a set window. It’s something that Dr. Peters said is “really pushing the science forward.”But the smart alarm and wake-up light aren’t the only ways the device can make your sleep experience more personalized. Halo Rise works even better with Alexa. If it’s connected to a compatible Echo device, you can sync your Halo Rise smart alarm so you can be woken up by your favorite song, or combine the device with other smart lights that can be controlled using just your voice. You can also use the device as part of a personalized Alexa Routine. For instance, when you get into bed, Alexa can automatically dim the lights in the bedroom, turn off the TV, and start a relaxing meditation. The smart alarm, wake-up light, and seamless Alexa integration help you create a smarter, more personalized sleep experience, making Halo Rise so much more than just a sleep tracker. But that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t stand out, first and foremost, for its meaningful presentation of accurate, contactless sleep data.“Especially in the competitive landscape of sleep trackers, I would say Amazon has exercised a lot of patience in really thinking about how we can add value for the customer,” Dr. Gupta said. “That customer centricity with Halo Rise has really been about doubling down on the fact that customers want to purchase wellness devices that they can trust. The information you’re getting from it is rigorous. It’s meaningful. It really can help you improve your sleep.”Learn more about the new devices announced during the annual Devices & Services Fall Launch event.

Announcing a new Kindle—one you can write on

Announcing a new Kindle—one you can write on

Chris LaBrutto has always been an avid reader, losing himself in history books in his youth and later on reaching for the science fiction and fantasy novels. But that’s not the only way his reading habits have changed. Once an avowed fan of the print book, LaBrutto is now a dedicated Kindle reader.Ok, LaBrutto works for Amazon, which developed Kindle, but that’s not the sole reason for his conversion. “I definitely like it much better,” he said. “It’s thin and light, and with the front light I can read it anywhere.”Now, as a product manager at Amazon, LaBrutto and the rest of the Kindle team have designed and built the next generation of Kindle: Kindle Scribe.Kindle Scribe features a large new display, and for the first time, this new Kindle includes a pen for customers to add notes to books, mark up documents, create to-do lists, and generally write on the screen just like paper.”Kindle Scribe is the best Kindle we’ve ever built, creating a reading and writing experience that feels like real paper,” said Kevin Keith, vice president of Amazon Devices. “It’s inspired by the Kindle customers who have added billions of notes and highlights to books over the years, and it’s also ideal for reviewing and marking up documents, managing your to-do list, or doodling over a big idea. I’m so excited to get it in the hands of customers soon.”Keith said the new Kindle pairs features customers know and love, including access to more than 13 million eBooks available worldwide in the Kindle store, adjustable fonts, and weeks of battery life, with the world’s first 10.2” 300 ppi glare-free Paperwhite display. “The screen itself is a big deal,” said Jordan Meenen, another senior product manager on the Kindle team. “Going with a display of this size means you don’t have to turn pages as often. You can use a big font for readability and get great text layout.”Getting stuff done

Kindle has been a huge hit ever since Amazon founder Jeff Bezos unveiled the first model in 2007. Since then, the company has been constantly working to improve the experience by adding more functionality to the e-reader.To understand what could come next, the team started talking to customers about what they love about reading on Kindle and looking at what features they used the most. They found a growing interest in reading non-fiction books and that customers around the world add billions of notes and highlights while reading on Kindle.Using this feedback, Amazon set out to make the reading of non-fiction books, but also PDFs, articles, and other documents with charts, graphs, and images even more seamless. “Non-fiction readers want a larger page layout so they can see content like charts and graphs, and they also want to be able to mark up the pages,” LaBrutto said. “In many cases, they are going beyond a leisurely weekend read and are trying to learn something. Seeing all of the visual detail and their written notes are both important parts of that experience.”The pandemic also magnified another need the Kindle team wanted to meet. “When COVID-19 hit and we all started working from home, we realized that a lot of us were looking for new devices and services that could help us be more productive,” LaBrutto said.As personal and professional lives blended, LaBrutto, Meenen and the rest of the Kindle hardware and software teams sought to create a new kind of Kindle that could help non-fiction readers, hybrid workers, and anyone looking for an immersive and organized reading and writing experience. This new Kindle, Meenen said, “could fully meet the needs of readers while also offering these uniquely digital experiences like sharing marked-up documents with your computer or phone; searching through, filtering and organizing notebooks full of meetings notes, journals, or to-do lists; or annotating text with sticky notes that don’t clutter the page.”So they got to work.Street smartsEnabling the new reading and writing features on Kindle Scribe involved a number of software and hardware design components. At the center of it all is a new large, thin display that showcases writing, graphs, and images in gorgeous detail, a battery-free pen, and new foldable covers, each element designed to delight readers and writers. Fortunately, LaBrutto and Meenen had the help of another Kindle convert, Amazon designer Tim Wall.Wall, who studied print-making and sculpture in college, discovered the power of industrial design on the streets of Seattle in his 20s. He was working for a company that employed people recently released from prison to help clean local neighborhoods. Drawing on his art school education, he designed a replacement for the dustpans the employees used that wore out easily. “I believe that you have to do the work first to find out what the right tool is,” he said. “You don’t need to be an expert to understand what people need. You just need to have empathy or, better, the sympathy of real experience.”Now in his forties and in Silicon Valley, Wall has spent the last 11 years applying the same lessons to Kindle at Amazon’s mythical invention playground, Lab126—1 stands for A, the first letter in the alphabet, and 26 stands for Z, the last. Amazon engineers and designers working there have conjured up new devices and innovations like Kindle, the Alexa-enabled line of Echo smart speakers, and the home robot Astro.

Introducing Amazon’s Kindle Scribe | Amazon News

Sanctuary experienceKindle is the perfect example of an effective blend of innovation and comfort. Kindle marries simplicity and connectivity—you can use it to purchase, download, and search books, newspapers, magazines, and other documents in the massive Kindle store. This potent combination has succeeded in creating “a sanctuary experience,” Wall said, “reducing and eliminating distraction where possible so that the reading experience is primary.”Creating and maintaining that experience involves more than just removing distractions. The physical attributes of Kindle are critical as well. “Pleasing shapes that are easy to hold, thinness, lightness, those are all compelling attributes of almost all technology, but even more important in something that is meant to be distraction free,” Wall said. That’s why adding new features like a pen that never needs charging or syncing, and a screen that feels and looks like paper was fraught with challenges that were sometimes hard to quantify. “Writing on paper goes back to some of your earliest childhood experiences,” Wall said. “Its tactile qualities are really important in humanizing that slab of electronics.”

“I will be bringing my Kindle Scribe to work every day, and I think all sorts of readers and writers are going to find a variety of features they love.”

Jordan Meenen, senior product manager, Kindle

To build a seamless and distraction-free reading and writing device, the team started brainstorming ideas, building models and prototypes, and testing them with each other. “It still needs to be a Kindle, it still needs to be a reader, but now it’s also a writer,” Wall said. “How do you balance those things?”They tapped ergonomics and other experts who, Wall said, “dive deep into human factors and behavior, like how would someone with this weight and this angle hold it? Where is the fulcrum? How soft are the curves and edges?”The team worked hard on finding the right anti-glare coating on the display and the right kind of tip on the pen to mimic the feeling of writing on paper. “We tested hundreds of combinations to find the delicate balance of creating just the right amount of friction on the display for writing while still delivering crisp text for a world-class reading experience Kindle customers expect,” said Nag Tadepalli, lead display engineer for Kindle Scribe. The team designed the pen tip using a hard felt that, paired with our custom display coating, avoids the slippery feeling produced by styluses with molded plastic tips and actually sounds like writing on paper.Need proof that they found the right balance?Meenen has so fully adopted Kindle Scribe that he not only reads on the device, but he uses it every day to review documents and take notes during meetings. His personal favorite Kindle Scribe feature is the ability to import, mark up, and export documents, but he’s excited for customers to discover their own favorites from among the many new features, from sticky notes for annotators, to the notebooks feature for writers, to the screen for, well, everyone. “I will be bringing my Kindle Scribe to work every day, and I think all sorts of readers and writers are going to find a variety of features they love,” he said.Your new favorite toolCustomers around the world will be able to discover their favorite thing about Kindle Scribe in time for the holidays. Like previous Kindle e-readers, Kindle Scribe retains weeks-long battery life, an adjustable warm light and auto-adjusting front light, instant access to the Kindle Store, and a host of accessibility features. For the first time ever, Kindle Scribe users will be able to write with a pen featuring customizable line widths that comes with highlighter and eraser tools. Kindle Scribe also includes templates for notetaking and to-do lists, and with the Send to Kindle feature, customers can easily transfer content from their computer or phone for reading or notetaking, including PDF, Microsoft Word and other document formats. From the tactile writing experience to the way it feels in your hands, Kindle Scribe has been designed to be a tool you can use in many aspects of your life. Indeed, as Wall said, “I’m inspired by the tools that we use every day. I still have on my desk my wooden brush from my first days in art school. The well-honed tool is a sign that it’s essential, that it was designed well and fits the purpose. In a way, I think that’s what we’re trying to do with Kindle Scribe.”Learn more about the new devices announced during the annual Devices & Services Fall Launch event.

Target’s Debt-Free Education Benefit is Helping Team Members Turn Higher Learning into New Careers

Computer, bullseye and certificate icons on a red, pink and orange background.

Last fall, Target introduced a new debt-free education assistance benefit, Dream to Be, giving team members access to tuition-free undergraduate and associates degrees, certificates and bootcamp programs — both online and in-person — from over 40 schools, colleges and universities through our partner Guild. And one year later, there’s a lot to celebrate: More than 75,000 team members have expressed interest and opened accounts with Guild since September 2021.

The inspiration behind the program? To find even more meaningful ways to continue to support and empower our team members, to help create a more equitable and inclusive workforce and to open career paths for all. Our talented team is at the very heart of Target’s strategy, and we have a long history of investing in industry-leading pay, extensive benefits, education assistance and career opportunities to help them have rewarding careers. Our $200 million investment in Dream to Be over four years will help ensure all team members have the opportunity to grow their skills and build their careers.

To celebrate Dream to Be’s first year, we caught up with Target team members Shane Taylor, Arlene Haskins, Sara Oros, Robel Gebremeskel and Sara Gregg (pictured above from top left to right). Each participated in coding and web development bootcamps through Dream to Be, which in turn helped them earn spots in Target’s Emerging Engineers Program. And each ultimately transitioned from our stores team to full-time engineering roles at Target. (While we’re sharing their engineering success journeys below, know that the Dream to Be program is broad, supporting team members in career paths like business, communications and design, to name a few, too.)

The start of something new

Team members have come across Dream to Be in a variety of ways, from coworker referrals to a poster tacked on an office bulletin board. However the inspiration strikes, giving all team members easy and affordable ways to learn, grow and build their skills fits right in with our Target values.

Dream to Be alumnus Arlene Haskins shares that debt-free education assistance piqued her interest as soon as she saw the information in her onboarding materials. “I was looking for ways to advance myself,” says Arlene. “I had friends in coding and web development who encouraged me to check it out, so I decided to find a way to get a certificate or a degree.”

Taking the next step

Arlene ultimately decided to enroll in a six-month web development bootcamp. For her and team members like Sara Oros (who also went through an engineering bootcamp), having support from their Target teams was a big help in balancing work with a rigorous course of study. “I’m so grateful for my team leads,” says Sara. “They would ask me how is school going and how my assignments are and towards the end they gave me a big hug and said they were proud of me. They knew that this was such a big deal.”

Team members completing coursework through Dream to Be also have access to a suite of resources, including teaching assistants, tutors and coaches, so help is never far away. “The TAs and instructors were always available to answer questions and my tutor was fantastic — I could send an email if I had a question or got stuck,” says data analytics bootcamp graduate Sara Gregg. Engineering bootcamp graduate Robel Gebremeskel also took advantage of productivity tools that were available to help students prioritize and work more efficiently. “The bootcamp really had a lot of resources, even with things like time management,” says Robel.

After building a strong engineering foundation in their Dream to Be bootcamps, Arlene, Robel, Sara Gregg, Sara Oros and Shane each landed a spot in Target’s Emerging Engineers Program. It’s a year-long training program that provides onboarding and ongoing classroom instruction for newly minted engineers, and upon completion, engineers are equipped with a strong foundation to continue in their full-time engineering roles.

Turning new skills into new careers

Dream to Be not only helps team members further their careers but can also help teams across Target find the right people, too. For example, the Target tech team worked with human resources and partners at Guild to identify programs within the network that are helping team members gain the skills they’d need for a tech role. Eligible team members were contacted with information about the Emerging Engineers Program and given support and mentorship once they decided to apply. Shane shares: “My mentor was a lead engineer at Target who helped me a ton, especially with the behavioral and peer-programming interviews.”

And the months of preparation paid off: All five team members officially started in the program earlier this month.

“You don’t have anything to lose — bet on yourself.”

Looking back on his Dream to Be and Emerging Engineers experience, Shane has a few words of wisdom for team members interested in an education program. “If you’re considering it, you should just do it — it exposes you to more choices in your potential career path.”

These team members’ stories are shining examples of how Target’s robust education offerings and career programs like the Emerging Engineers Program help team members build solid foundations and contribute to the business in new and exciting ways.

Together with our industry-leading pay and benefits, Target’s commitment to helping team members thrive is clear. And as for the future? Sara Oros is excited to keep her knowledge growing. “I’m just ready to learn more and take things to the next level,” says Sara.

“I think the biggest takeaway is, anything I put my heart and mind to I can do.”

8 tips to help kids establish healthy habits around the devices in your home

8 tips to help kids establish healthy habits around the devices in your home

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends cutting off screen time at least an hour prior to bedtime. Dr. Michael Rich, an associate professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and founder of the Digital Wellness Lab, advises bedtimes for both kids and devices.“I recommend to my patients that they turn off all screens 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime and place their phones, tablets, and all screens outside of their bedroom with the volume off overnight. They will fall asleep more easily and stay asleep longer,” said Dr. Rich, who is also a physician and researcher at Boston Children’s Hospital.

How Amazon is helping employees, communities, and customers during Hurricane Ian

How Amazon is helping employees, communities, and customers during Hurricane Ian

Hurricane Ian has made landfall as a Category 4 storm along the western coast of Florida, according to the National Hurricane Center. Our thoughts are with those impacted by the hurricane, and we’re already taking steps to support our employees, communities, and customers in the region.Supporting our employeesAmazon has more than 8,000 employees in the Tampa area, and their safety is our top priority. We’re taking several actions to keep them protected:Our teams near the path of the storm are implementing safety plans, which ensure that our employees have time to prioritize their personal safety and seek shelter. We’ve closed more than 80 facilities in the path of the storm, including Whole Foods Market stores. We’re paying employees for scheduled shifts during the closures.Supporting our communitiesOur disaster relief team is ready to use Amazon’s logistics infrastructure and expertise to support the communities impacted by the storm. Over the past few days, we’ve worked with our partners on the ground to be ready to provide aid after the hurricane hits. Those efforts include prepositioning key relief products as close as possible to areas in the storm’s path, so we can quickly ship supplies to communities that need them the most. Here are some of the steps we’ve taken so far to help:We activated Amazon’s Disaster Relief Hub, a special warehouse in Atlanta where the company prepositions over 1 million relief items that we know are the most needed when a disaster strikes.Amazon teams have loaded 10 trucks with over 360,000 bottles of water and strategically prepositioned the vehicles around Florida and in other southern U.S. states, so we can quickly deliver clean water to impacted communities. We have reserved a parking lot at one of our facilities in Jacksonville, Florida, to allow the Red Cross to park up to 75 trailers that will help transport relief items as soon as they’re needed.Supporting our customersWe have closed several Amazon locations to keep employees and their families safe, and delivery routes have been affected by the storm damage, so we know customers in the same areas will be impacted. Here’s what we’re doing to continue serving Amazon customers:We will use our fulfillment capacity outside the region impacted by the storm to support customer orders, especially facilities in the Southwest and Midwest. We are monitoring the hurricane’s forecast so we can precisely estimate what areas will be impacted by the storm and quickly deliver essential products to those communities. For customers in impacted areas, we are extending our delivery promise because our teams will not be able to deliver in certain zip codes until it’s safe to do so.We are monitoring our online stores 24 hours a day, both automatically and manually, to combat price gouging, including of essential items that might be in high-demand during the storm. We quickly remove bad actors and offers that don’t meet our long-standing policy of zero tolerance for price gouging in our stores. We will continue to keep track of Hurricane Ian, mobilize our teams, and repurpose our logistics infrastructure to support our employees, customers, and the communities we call home.Learn more about Amazon Disaster Relief.

Amazon Worldwide Selling Partner Services Vice President Dharmesh Mehta speaks with legendary tennis champion and entrepreneur Venus Williams.

“I don’t see challenge as an issue. I see it as something that will never stop me, and even if it stops me temporarily—and I have, so to speak, failed—it’s just a moment for me. I will never accept failure, ever,” Williams said. “If you’re doing something positive, someone else is going to see that, someone else is going to be motivated by that. Someone else is going to see themselves in you and say, ‘Wow, I can do that too.’”Williams is one of the nearly 2 million selling partners selling in Amazon’s store, and she highlighted some of the ways Amazon has accelerated her selling journey.“[Amazon] gives you an opportunity to start, get immediate feedback, and be able to understand how you can improve—and then do more of what’s already happening that you’re doing right,” she said. What Amazon sellers had to sayThroughout the Accelerate 2022 conference, entrepreneurs and small business owners connected with one another and Amazon leaders to share their stories and experiences building their businesses in Amazon’s store, reinforcing the value of Amazon’s selling community.

“Every time I talk to somebody, I always learn something new about how they’re running their business, something I haven’t thought of before, an idea that maybe completely blows my mind,” said Colin McIntosh with Sheets & Giggles. “And that’s the best part about networking with other consumer brands, is you really start to understand the areas you’re missing—and then you get to teach them things too.”“I was just excited to be here,” added Shambrekía Wise from Sightseeing with Sandy. “Being around warm, like-minded people who want to see you succeed, from your partners at Amazon to other partners that are here and present, to just sellers. It’s really nice to be in a community that gets it, and we want to see each other win.”Building a community for sellers on AmazonAmazon’s investments in the success of its thriving seller community fuel business growth for its selling partners, as well as a better customer experience, as Amazon Worldwide Stores CEO Doug Herrington explained.“Without our sellers, the Amazon store’s experience that our customers know and love would not exist. And we are blessed to have 2 million selling partners working with us to serve our customers,” Herrington said.

Amazon Worldwide Stores CEO Doug Herrington speaks with Amazon Worldwide Selling Partner Services Vice President Dharmesh Mehta.

Amazon Vice President of Brand Protection Mary Beth Westmoreland, speaks with Claire O’Donnell, director of Selling Partner Empowerment, Communities, and Trust.

9 Things to Buy for Hot-Desking and Desk Hoteling

The new normal for many workers (after more than two years into the pandemic) is hybrid or remote work. While most remote workers typically work from home, they might switch it up at a cafe, or even break up the monotony at a local coworking space. This kind of freedom is what makes remote work so tempting;  all you need is a portable desk, laptop and Wi-Fi.

Countless other workers are somewhere in the middle, operating on a hybrid schedule. You’ll have to go into the office (and, yes, get dressed in your back-to-the office clothes), but you don’t have to do it daily (whew). Sometimes it’s a few days a week in the office, for others it might be only a few days a month.

After tasting the flexibility that comes with remote work and perhaps the reduced operating costs, more and more employers are offering their employees hybrid schedules. Logistically, many offices are implementing this hybrid setup with a work structure known as hot-desking/hoteling.

What Is Hot-Desking/Hoteling?

Simply put, hot-desking is when an office offers desks/offices but employees don’t have assigned spaces. Instead, the office uses a first come, first serve system for workstations. You show up to the office and grab an open desk, office or workstation. Typically you can expect docking stations and plenty of outlets for your laptop. Hoteling is similar except you will need to reserve your workspace/desk in advance. This system works particularly well for hybrid work offices where you don’t have employees coming in every day.

Modern workers are expected to be flexible, accept non-permanence and pick up and make any workspace their own. Here are some great products to help you feel comfortable and work productively no matter where you are sitting.

Panasonic ErgoFit Wired Earbuds With Microphone and Call Control

Image: Amazon

Available in black, white and a variety of fun bright colors, these affordable wired earbuds connect via a 3.5mm headphone jack for laptops, phones or tablets (some devices require an adapter, check with your model). These earbuds also have an integrated microphone and remote (on the wire just below your face) to help you make and take calls.

Why We Love It for Hot-Desking: When you are in a shared workspace or hot-desking you can’t always guarantee that you’ll get a secluded space. In order to preserve your privacy and be thoughtful to those working around you, it’s essential to have earbuds. We love the added microphone and call control, which ensures you won’t be shouting in appropriately.

Why We Love It for Hot-Desking: These days you can never be too careful with your hygiene. In a shared and communal desk office setting, it can’t hurt to bring your own sanitizing wipes just in case. I have personally used this kit and I love the blended essential oil scent which isn’t overpowering. We love that it’s small enough to stash in your computer bag.

Best Buy recognized for support of military employees

MERG award blog

By Emily Gaylord
September 28, 2022

Best Buy was recently recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Defense for benefits and assistance available to military employees with the Above and Beyond Award.

In addition, multiple leaders across the company have received Patriot Awards for their personal support of an employee serving in the National Guard.

The Best Buy Military Employee Resource Group (ERG) leadership team accepted the Above and Beyond award on behalf of the company at the Minnesota State Fair on Aug. 30.

“We are genuinely honored to receive this award,” said ERG chair Nikki Kukla. “We have over 3,000 military employees at Best Buy who make a difference each day for our customers, like they did in service for our country, and it’s important we show them our support any way we can.”

Empathetic leaders in action

It’s the day-to-day interactions that make a difference to ensure employees feel cared about and supported.

A few months ago, Geek Squad manager Jeff Reinert was going through tremendous change in his life. He was preparing to go on a monthlong leave for National Guard training and in the process of interviewing for a new position within Best Buy.

Then, he received an urgent call from his sister asking him to help her move back home to Pennsylvania from across the country.

“It all just happened at once,” he said.

Jeff worked with his current and hiring managers, Chris Ciraula and Ted Minda, to schedule interviews and shadowing opportunities around his schedule. After returning from helping his sister move, Jeff completed his last interview and was offered the job as Geek Squad Manager at Store 589 in Northeast Philadelphia later that day. He spent the next three days doing a deep dive with his team and getting to know his new role before leaving for National Guard training.

“In the moment, it felt like their support was extraordinary,” he said. “Between Ted and Chris, they continued to mentor me and push me forward.”

Jeff nominated both Chris and Ted for a Patriot Award, and both received the award from the U.S. Department of Defense.

“I wanted to recognize them and show people that there are good things happening within the company” Jeff said. “They really bring out the human side of Best Buy.”

Culture of support

Jeff’s is one of many stories throughout Best Buy where military employees have felt empathy and support from their teams — not just when called to duty, but for every time they need to put themselves or their families first.

Military and veteran employees can also find support through benefits and resources at Best Buy.

The Military ERG is a space for employees to find community based on shared experiences serving or supporting loved ones in the military. The group hosts listening sessions for members and brings feedback to the company on ways to make the military or veteran employee experience better.

Some of that feedback led to a comprehensive guide for recruiters to understand military vocabulary, ranks and skills to apply them to related jobs at Best Buy.

The company provides a military leave of absence and leave guide for managers and employees to lead them through the process. All employees also have access to the Employee Assistance Program (EAP), which can connect military employees to counselors and resources for their mental health.

Whether it’s through building connections in employee resource groups or taking advantage of company benefits, Nikki said it’s important that current and former military employees feel like someone cares about them and is invested in their well-being.

“We want to maintain a culture that allows all employees to grow and succeed in their career,” Nikki said.

New ’70s Fashion to Whip Your Fall Wardrobe Into Shape

While streetwear fashion has been dominated by the ’90s and early 2000s lately, the chic styles from the 1970s are still going strong. Maybe it’s because the popular silhouettes of the era — high waists, blousy tops, bell-bottoms and maxi dresses — are just way too classic to let go.

Before Madonna became the fashion icon of the ’80s (or was that just me), girls in the 1970s were trying to reinvent themselves with the “Farrah (Fawcett) Flick,” Diana Ross’ disco-inspired extravagance, Ali MacGraw’s bohemian goddess vibe and Debbie Harry’s (Blondie) minidresses paired with over-the-knee latex boots. It was just a really fun time in women’s fashion with designers like Diane von Furstenberg, Gloria Vanderbilt and Halston influencing the retail racks.

The ’70s aesthetic is continually being incorporated into a lot of the modern styles we see today. In fact, brands like Nike, Reebok and New Balance, to name a few, have recently reissued some of their most popular retro sneaker styles from the 1970s. And we really can’t get enough of it.

These are our top picks for the newest ’70s-inspired fall fashion for under $100:

eBay Motors to Sponsor Sarah and Bridget Burgess in Historic Mother-Daughter ARCA Race

eBay Motors, the parts and accessories destination used by millions of car lovers, wrenchers, racers and mechanics, today announces its sponsorship of Sarah and Bridget Burgess for the Oct. 14 ARCA Menards West Series race at The Bullring, Las Vegas, NV. The event marks the first time in NASCAR and ARCA history that a mother and daughter have raced each other in the sport.
“A lot of work has gone into this moment and it’s surreal to know that Bridget and I will both be behind the wheel on the same track in a matter of weeks,” said Sarah Burgess, who will be racing the number 97 eBay Motors Chevrolet SS. “It’s incredible to have the support of eBay Motors. Not only is it a leading brand for professional racers and casual builders – I can say from personal experience that it’s also a community of people who genuinely care about racing and car culture.”
Sarah, a longtime drift and off-road racer, is also a senior business development and partnership manager for eBay Motors where she helps to grow the marketplace’s presence within the industry. Sarah serves as owner of the BMI Racing team and pulls double duty as Bridget’s crew chief on race day. And now, after years of supporting her daughter’s racing aspirations, Sarah is joining Bridget on the oval for the ultimate competition – both sporting the eBay Motors logo.

“The eBay Motors team is made up of car enthusiasts like Sarah,” said Ron Jaiven, GM of P&A, eBay Motors. “Our passion is to support and engage in the automotive community, whether it’s sponsoring events that draw car lovers nationwide or being the source for hard-to-find performance parts. It’s incredible that Sarah and her daughter Bridget will make NASCAR history together. We’re eager to watch their journey to Las Vegas and will be cheering them on from the stands.”
eBay Motors is home to half a billion live listings, including cars and trucks, motorcycles, side-by-sides, ATVs and more, plus all of the parts and accessories that make them run. Three parts or accessories are sold every second on the marketplace which draws some 40 million buyers worldwide. As the platform of choice for gearheads and casual maintainers alike, eBay Motors offers unrivaled selection and value, helping shoppers to find the right part at the right price.
“We have known Sarah as a crew chief, team owner and supportive parent to her daughter Bridget, and now we can’t wait to see her climb into the car to race in Las Vegas,” said Chris Wright, the Series Director of the ARCA Menards Series West. “This will be a historic moment for our sport as we’ll have the first mother-daughter pair racing against each other in a NASCAR touring series division.”

We’ve Got *Super* Marvel and Disney News, Right in Time for the Holidays

Three actors from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever face the camera, with a purple background. A graphic reads: Marvel Studios Black Panther Wakanda Forever only in theaters. Coming to Target.

Disney fans, we have super news. Target and Disney are teaming up again in two fantastical ways: a first-of-its-kind collaboration with Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” and the expansion of our magical Disney store at Target shop-in-shops.

Wakanda Forever!

Ready for this, Black Panther fans? We’re teaming up with Marvel Studios in support of the new movie, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” coming to U.S. theaters Nov. 11. The first-of-its-kind collaboration is stronger than vibranium, with exclusive Black Panther merch, augmented-reality fun, movie screenings and more.

The backstory: Our guests loved the first movie, which quickly became a cultural phenomenon and a groundbreaking film featuring a Black Super Hero, a predominantly Black cast and a Black director. So we couldn’t wait to be part of the next chapter in the story — and the next step in celebrating diversity and representation onscreen. The sequel’s brimming with strong, diverse female characters and aligns with our own Racial Equity Action Change (REACH) commitment to create meaningful and authentic experiences for Black team members and guests.

“At Target, we’re constantly innovating and collaborating with iconic brands to deliver an experience where all families feel seen, heard and celebrated,” says Maurice Cooper, senior vice president of marketing, Target. “The release of Marvel Studios’ ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ will be a significant cultural moment, and Target is excited and proud to amplify its joy, inspiration and purpose, which will be meaningful for our guests and communities we serve across the country.”

Gear up with Black Panther merch

We’ll launch products exclusive to Target in the U.S. this October across toys, home, apparel and beauty — with everything from pillows and pjs to the only-at-Target LEGO “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” Royal Sea Leopard ship. And Black Panther fans won’t want to miss our sought-after collectibles, including some exclusive items from the Black Panther Legacy Collection POP! series from Funko.

Explore Wakanda from your phone

While you’re checking out all the Black Panther merch, you can also get in on the action and explore two immersive augmented reality experiences. In stores, look for Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” signs in the toy department, then scan the QR code with your smartphone to explore “Wakandan-inspired” technology. From there, you can watch the build of the LEGO Royal Sea Leopard or interact with one of the Hasbro Titan 3-pack action figures. On Target.com, you can access these augmented reality experiences by visiting Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” landing page starting Oct. 2.

Screenings for good

Together with Disney and Marvel Studios, we’re also hosting more than 130 community screenings of the film in support of, and attended by, nonprofit organizations in select markets across the U.S.

“For years, families have enjoyed finding their favorite Disney characters and stories at Target, and through this expanded collaboration, we’re bringing the magic and heart of ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ to our product assortment,” says Jill Sando, executive vice president and chief merchandising officer, Target. “Across the products we carry — from toys and home to apparel and beauty — we’re bringing the Marvel universe to our guests with items and immersive experiences that spark imagination and joy.”

A Disney store at Target shop-in-shop

More Disney magic coming your way

We’re expanding our fan-favorite Disney store at Target shop-in-shops to more than 200 total locations by the end of the year. This gives even more guests the chance to enjoy the magical in-store experience while shopping for toys and apparel from brands like Disney, Marvel and Star Wars, including new items from Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” in time for the holiday season. Check out the curated Disney experience on Target.com and use the online store locator to find a Disney store at Target near you.
